Organic muslin swaddle blankets in several animal prints — how many swaddles you need

How Many Muslin Swaddles Do You Need?

The short answer: Most parents need 4 to 6 muslin swaddles. That covers one in use, one in the wash, and a spare in the diaper bag — with a little buffer for the days that go sideways.

Why 4 to 6 is the sweet spot

Muslin gets used constantly, and it gets messy constantly — spit-up, drool, leaks. With a newborn you're often washing every couple of days, so you want enough to never be caught without a clean one. Fewer than 4 and you'll be doing laundry on the baby's schedule, not yours.

Adjust up if:

  • You use them as your main swaddle for sleep (you'll want a clean one ready every night)
  • You're using them as burp cloths and swaddles (they go through more)
  • You do laundry less than every 2 to 3 days

Adjust down if:

  • You're using dedicated sleep sacks for night and muslins mainly for daytime
  • You have a smaller laundry gap

A note on buying as a gift

Muslin swaddles are the default baby-shower gift, so new parents often receive several thin, generic ones. If you're gifting, the move isn't more — it's better: a few organic, genuinely soft swaddles they'll actually keep, over a big stack of synthetic ones that get set aside.

MulmulBaby swaddles come in a 3-pack, so two packs land most parents right in the 4 to 6 range — or get them bundled with bibs and burp cloths in the Newborn Gift Set.
