What Is Muslin, and Why Do Parents Use It for Babies?
If you have spent any time around new parents, you have seen muslin: over a shoulder, tucked in a diaper bag, wrapped around a sleeping newborn. It has been the everyday cloth of baby care for generations, and in Indian homes, where the fine variety called mulmul comes from, for much longer than that. So what is it, exactly, and why do so many parents keep reaching for it?
What muslin actually is
Muslin is not a brand or a special fiber. It is cotton woven in a simple plain weave, one thread over and one under, with the threads spaced loosely enough that you can see light through a single layer. That open weave is the whole character of the fabric. It is light, it drapes and folds easily, and a large square packs down to almost nothing.
Compare that with the cotton most onesies are made from. Jersey and interlock are knits: looped yarn that stretches and feels denser. Both are cotton. They are just built differently, which is why muslin is used for wraps and cloths and knit cotton for fitted everyday clothes.
Why parents use it
It's light and easy to wrap
A muslin square is thin enough to fold into a snug swaddle without bulk, and big enough to do a dozen other jobs. The open weave lets air move through the cloth rather than sitting like a heavy layer.
It handles the messy parts of the day
Cotton takes up water readily, and several layers of thin muslin are why it has long been the traditional choice for burp cloths, bibs and after-bath wraps. It washes easily and doesn't need special care beyond what's on the label.
It keeps things simple against the skin
When a cloth is one fiber, never a blend, you know exactly what is touching your baby. That matters to parents whose babies have skin that feels everything.
Everyday uses
- Swaddling: a large square wraps neatly. Follow safe-swaddling guidance from your pediatrician.
- Burp cloth: over the shoulder during feeds.
- Bib: for drool and first foods.
- After-bath wrap: a big muslin square doubles as a light towel.
- Nursing cover: light enough to drape without fuss.
- Tummy-time layer: a clean surface on the floor, always with you right there.
One safety note: muslin is still a blanket. Keep loose blankets out of the crib, and don't drape one over a stroller or car seat with your baby inside.
